Dr. Amal Sethi is a Senior Fellow at the Faculty of Law, University of Hamburg. His primary research and teaching interests lie in the comparative and interdisciplinary study of Public Law (Constitutional and Administrative Law). He also has secondary interests in Legal Theory, Empirical Analysis of Law, and European and International Law. Amal's current research, funded by a multi-year grant from the German Government's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through its Excellence Strategy, explores questions in constitution-making, institutional design, and judicial politics. Previously, he has been affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania (2020-21), the National Law School of India University (2021), the Legal Priorities Project (2021), the University of Liverpool (2021-22), and Harvard University (2021-23).
Amal serves as the Director for Technology at the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S), is a member of its Committee on Community and Engagement, and co-chairs its interest group on constitution-making. He has also consulted for various governmental and inter-governmental agencies, including USAID, the US Department of Commerce, CEDAW, UNESCO, UNDP, UN Women, UNHCHR, and The SDG Fund. Additionally, Amal has worked in the past with the Center of Ethics and the Rule of Law (2015-16), Chief Justice F.I. Rebello of the Allahabad High Court (2013-15), Citizens for Justice and Peace (2011-13) and Justice Roshan Dalvi of the Bombay High Court (2011).

Amal obtained his Doctorate and Master's in Law from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Philadelphia, where he was a Salzburg Cutler Fellow and a Global Women Leadership Project Fellow. He earned his Bachelor of Laws from the Government Law College, Mumbai, where he was awarded the Best Student Award and the Nivedita Nathany Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership.
