Dr. Amal Sethi is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Public Law at the University of Leicester. At the University of Leicester, Amal is the module convenor for Public Law (Constitutional and Administrative Law) and also lectures/tutors in the modules on Canadian Constitutional Law and the European Convention of Human Rights. His primary research interests lie in the comparative and interdisciplinary study of Public Law. He also has secondary interests in Legal Theory, Empirical Analysis of Law, and European and International Law.
In addition, Amal serves as the Deputy Secretary General at the International Society of Public Law (ICON-S). He is also the co-chair of ICON-S's interest group on constitution-making and a member of its committee on community and engagement. Between 2021-2024, he served as the ICON-S Director of Technology.
Prior to the University of Leicester, Amal was based at the University of Hamburg (2021-2024), where he undertook a multi-year research project funded by the German Government's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through its Excellence Strategy. Previously, he has been affiliated with and/or held short-term positions at the University of Pennsylvania (2020-21), the National Law School of India University (2021), the Legal Priorities Project (2021), the University of Liverpool (2021-22), and Harvard University (2021-23).
He has consulted for various governmental and inter-governmental agencies, including USAID, the US Department of Commerce, CEDAW, UNESCO, UNDP, UN Women, UNHCHR, and The SDG Fund. Additionally, Amal has worked in the past with the Center of Ethics and the Rule of Law (2015-16), Chief Justice F.I. Rebello of the Allahabad High Court (2013-15), Citizens for Justice and Peace (2011-13) and Justice Roshan Dalvi of the Bombay High Court (2011).
Amal's work has been published in Global Constitutionalism, Constitutional Studies, Vienna Journal of International Constitutional Law, The Journal of Federalism, Indian Law Review, Journal of Party Studies, Common Law World Review, American Journal of Comparative Law, Modern Law Review, Asia Pacific Law Review, International Review of Constitutional Reform, Keele Law Review, Global Review of Constitutional Law, National Law School of India Review, The University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law, The University of Missouri Kansas City Law Review, among others. Amal obtained his Doctorate and Master's in Law from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Philadelphia, where he was a Salzburg Cutler Fellow and a Global Women Leadership Project Fellow. He earned his Bachelor of Laws from the Government Law College, Mumbai, where he was awarded the Best Student Award and the Nivedita Nathany Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership.
